Welcome to the preview of the few pots I made this Summer. Honestly I am surprised by how little I've been in the studio these last couple months , at least it feels that way. But when I look at the pieces I have made- I can see that instead of focusing on production I took time to explore new ideas and work in a manner that was about discovery, using techniques that were certainly not the fastest way to make a pot. The thing with pottery making is that the mode of production is always glaringly apparent, and I think you can see that in these pieces especially.
I hope you enjoy this smallish collection and that as the Summer heat retreats, Fall holds pleasant days to come. Thankyou for looking. These pieces will be available tomorrow at 11 am CT ( 12 ET | 9 PT).
Cabbage Ware Pedestals
The cabbage pedestal pieces were intriguing to make, using spring cabbage leaves from our local farmers to imprint their veinous structures onto a slab of clay was just a starting point. From there they were draped over rounded molds to shape into a bowl, with coil techniques building their rims and tall bases. I kept a particularly tilted one for myself and have enjoyed it's levity. The rims are finished with a notching or twisting of clay for a rope look, and it very much completes the form.
The pieces were finished in either a dark molasses earth glaze - this glaze shows runs where the glaze poured from the piece OR in a brush of turquoise and dip of matte white for a watery ephemeral feeling.
I also like these cabbage mugs more than I care to admit. They hold about 14 oz and would be perfect with dark wood , and a whiskey coffee by the fire place.
Sea Shells and Marbled Clay
And 18 oz sea shell mugs with gold luster. These are only half way dipped on the outside in clear glaze- the smoothly sanded raw texture of the ribbed clay adds a textural interest when holding.
Last but not least- I re-worked these tall marbled vases with a bit of gold
