This large stout nearly enclosed piece was created using a rich red clay and the pinch and coil technique. A matte lime green was used to paint a floral vine, coiled around the pot, the over glaze is a nearly black umber with a grainy texture. I think of life, which will grow and seek to survive even through the darkness, a seedling will grow.
It is built from the bottom up- coil by coil. The outside of the piece is rippled, the effect of my thumb joining each coil to the one beneath it. On the inside of the pot, you can see the demarcation lines between each coil as the piece was constructed.
I've enjoyed pushing the proportion of how far the widest point can reach before it must be brought back to the center. With a larger pot like this the base is allowed to firm and dry a bit to support the weight of the remaining coils- the process of building can stretch over two days. Each piece is unique and one of a kind.
