The value of an in-person class, after so much online seclusion and meetings with voice delays, frozen screens and cat avatars, is not just in the physical creation of a piece- although that is wholly fulfilling in and of it's self- it is also in the sharing of space, small stories from our life with others. Creativity starves in a vaccum, it becomes boring and meaningless. Together creativity multiplies, and that is the beauty of making together. I am humbled by my student's openness and vulnerability in trying something new- I believe that art is truly for everyone, with this ethos I invite you into my space to create.
In this class students will take inspiration from a memory- of a golden moment in their life, or something transformational- really it can be anything that you feel drawn to, and would like to revisit from time to time. Students will receive a worksheet prior to class to help jog the memories, and identify visual cues that may make their way onto their piece.
This class is suited to beginner levels and people looking to create in community.
Day One, 3 hours: Painting | Carving | Adding clay accents
Sunday, April 27 11:30am -2:30pm
We will be working on a blank mug with a 'scroll' detail at the top of the handle, which has been wheel thrown by myself. The piece will be unfired and slightly moist- thus students will be able to add small accents of clay, and also carve into the piece. We will be painting the mugs using professional grade underglazes. Class will start with a short demo showing how to attach clay to the piece, painting approaches, and how to add carved detail. You are encourage to use all or as few of these methods as you would like, and I will be there to help guide and realize your ideas.
Day Two, 2 hours: Glaze
Sunday, May 4 11:30am-1:30pm
After your piece is dried completely it will be fired in the kiln. The last step is glazing to seal the mug making it food safe, and microwave and dishwasher safe. You are invited back to glaze if you so wish ( I will finish your piece with clear glaze if you skip this step). If you choose to come back for a second day, we will add more color to the mug using studio glazes, learning how to add depth to a piece while still allowing the original image to shine. Then your piece will go into the kiln for a final firing, emerging as a fully functional work of art.
Your piece will be ready to pick up in about two weeks time.
Housekeeping
- Please have trimmed nails for class. The process is rather neat, wear comfortable clothing that does not hang too loose/or sleeves that can be rolled up.
- Tea will be served (caffeinated and herbal).
- This class is intended for adults.
- Waiver/informational form required prior to class (if tools are used properly, I would not expect any one to get hurt).
Class will take place in my garage studio, is located in Saint Charles, IL. If it is a beautiful day, I may set up a tent to work outside.
Feel free to message me with any questions. If class is full but you are interested in attending, please email TwinettePoterie@gmail.com - if there is ample interest, I will offer a second class.
I look forward to sharing and creating with you!
