This piece shows a red-breasted nuthatch perched on a branch with tiny pinecones.
This piece was created by hand sculpting the bird and branch, cutting it in half, and hollowing it out for a lighter piece and also for structural integrity during the firing process. The oval base and is capped with a covering near the top to hide the hole used for hanging. The back of the piece is laid with a mirror mosaic which illuminates the piece, and also creates movement for the viewer walking by or observing.
In terms of pottery these pieces boast the most steps:
1) sculpting and painting underlayer, firing when dry.
2) glazing, second firing
3) painting on gold touches, firing the third time.
4) sanding exposed surface, and applying mosaic!
I am very proud of the first round of these and I have learned a lot from this very first batch. I will be hopefully making these again, note that the price they are offered at today is an 'introductory price'.
