Pentagon Vase 'The Bathers'

The pentagram vase is named so because it is built up from a pentagon as the base. The resulting geometry appears symmetrical from certain angles, and off center from other view points. The result is a different piece from every angle.

When painting this piece I thought about how often as humans we choose to view ourselves as separate from nature. As a species we have taken extreme lengths to alter our environments, treating fellow animals and habitats as things and raw materials from which to mine, log, and exploit, leaving the earth pock marked and scarred. The further we buy into this thinking, that all will be ok in the end, living within concrete walls and curated lawns, treated against the diversity of nature. Consumed by screens, we ignore our humanity, our dependance on harmony within the natural world is forgotten and we are approaching a ledge were our own existence is threatened.

This piece is one of a kind, it is hand built from slabs of marbled clay, similar to how one would construct textile forms.
