Made to Order Zinnia Fruit Bowl in Brushed Matte Cobalt

The Zinnia fruit bowl is the newest addition to the 'Garden' Series of tableware. Zinnias thrive in the summer's heat. I particularily love the 'Bernary' variety which unfolds with layer upon layer of petals, appearing as a giant pillow.  I sculpted each of these flowers over a week, petal by petal to cover every inch of a large wheel thrown bowl. 

Process:

The initial sculpted pieces was cast in plaster, creating a mold from which successive pieces can be made. The porcelain clay is now pressed into the mold to capture the original detail, a foot is added to the piece to add lift, and the bowl is carved with a petal motif rippling the underside. Once it is loosened from the mold, the rim is hand cut for an organic undulating edge which will vary a bit from piece to piece. A medallion with signature and date finishes each piece. 

Glazes offered are complimentary to each other and were selected to bring forth the design in different unique fashions. 

Brushed Matte Cobalt  - This glaze work softly reflects a cooler light. The color variance is achieved by painting a layer of cobalt glaze over the piece to fully coat, then wiping it away, resulting in a deeper blue in the carved areas. The piece is then dipped in a matte white which softens the color. This glaze technique takes longer to achieve thus is reflected in the price.

As each is made individually, allow for some variance between pieces.
