A dinnerware set inspired by the fluffy warm breath of Spring. This project was conceived to capture that fleeting first bouquet of the peony flower. I spent a week throwing porcelain plates, and carving each piece to emulate the pillowy layers of paper-thin petals, surrounded by their unearthly scent.
Process:
The initial set was cast in plaster, creating a mold from which successive pieces can be made. The porcelain clay is now pressed into the mold to capture the original detail, a foot is added to the piece to add a lightness, and each is carved with a petal motif rippeling the underside. Once it is loosened from the mold the rim is hand cut for an organic undulating edge which will vary a bit from piece to piece. A medallion with signature and date finishes each piece.
Glazes offered are complimentary to each other and were selected to bring forth the design in different notable fashions.
Pieces are ordered singly unless Full Set is selected. Full Set includes one dinner plate, one side plate, one dessert plate, and one bowl.
Buttercup - This pale pastel yellow is most reminecent of a true peony flower’s delicate hue. It shows the carved layers delicately, and feels very soft, light hearted and breezy.

As each is made individually, allow for some variance between pieces.
